DEAF & BLIND RECREATION PROGRAM
The Ski Program started over 30 years ago by a maintenance man named: Charles Ploss as Romney School for the Deaf&Blind. Charles had heard about deaf and blind students learning to ski. He inquired from the school principal to see if this could happen here in West Virginia. Charles was told that it could happen if there was money to pay for it. Not only being blind himself, but he was also a Lion, so he went to the Lions and asked for help and we have been helping ever since.
The Ski Program is not just Skiing anymore. The Lions take the Deaf and Blind and multi-handicap children: Camping, Train Rides, Fishing, Boating, Bowling, Rodeo, Pizza Parties, Plays, Sight Seeing and many other outings. They came to Wheeling several times to see programs and the Jamboree. They stayed overnight at the McClure House and some of the Wheeling Area Leo's provided and afternoon of fun and games and pizza.
The Lions purchased tents, camping gear and bed rolls and fishing equipment everything they need to enjoy an outing. The School provided the Buses and care giver to help the the students have a terrific time.
The School is a State Financed School and can not spend money on extra curricular activities. Being the caring and helpful people that Lions are, enjoy doing things for the Children and taking the children out for a day of fun. This also helps the children to have a well rounded life as most children have. Most of these children had never gone skiing or camping or bowling or many other activities. Past District Governor Billie Nichols has been the Chairperson for many, many years. He says the children and their families as so appreciation of our help that he could probably paper our house with all the Thanks You cards that he has received. It was great to hear that 80% last years seniors were going to college. The Lions also provided two $500.00 scholarships to 2 Blind students and two $500.00 scholarships to 2 Deaf students.
The Lions have also started a work program for the students that need a little extra cash. The students have a time card and receive a pay check for doing a few hours of work. They receive $2.50 per hour. This helps the students to have self respect and feels great to have a little cash on hand to buy a Pizza or Coke or what-ever.
We in District 29-L are far away in miles but not to far away to help by way of donations.
I would be happy to give a Program to your Club.
