It is hard to believe that the Blind Ski Program will be
starting its 34th year. They started out with a couple ski trips
in February, and that led them to camping along the South Branch
of the Potomac River, They fished and went horseback riding,
bowled, attended musical events, the Zoo, amusement parks,
sports, went to putt putt rodeos and all the pizza they could
eat. We also purchased tickets for "Deaf Awareness Day"
at King Dominion. Forty deaf students attended the event for a
total cost of $1,183.58.
Tickets were purchased for students to attend a musical show at
the American Mountain Theater in Elkins, WV. Nineteen blind
students attended this event and they were treated to Pizza at
Pizza Hut. Lee Shakelford discounted 30% off the total bill at
the restaurant. The average cost of the meal was around $5.50
per student. Not bad for all the pizza you could eat and how
many two liters of soda they drank. These kids can eat and it is
a joy to just sit back and watch them enjoying themselves.
Over the years, this program has changed names many times. It
started out as the Blind Ski Program, and when we started
including the deaf in the ski trips, we started referring to it
as the MD Blind Ski/Recreation Program. At this time, Barbara
Fisher is going to recommend to the Council of Governors to
again make a name change for this program. She would like to
propose that we now officially rename the program the MD Deaf
and Blind Recreation Program. Some clubs are already referring
to it as such and issue their checks
that way also. She feels the name change covers all aspects and
activities of the program.
