October has become increasingly busy for your VDG. We started out on
October 1st at our home club, Weirton, for our annual DG visit. On Sunday,
October 5th, we attended the 2nd Cabinet meeting for the District, held
at the Boaz Clubhouse near Parkersburg. I would like to thank the
Boaz club for their hospitality and the great luncheon they prepared for us.
At the cabinet meeting, zone chairs and cabinet chairs gave updates on
activities related to their areas of responsibilities. ID Lion Larry
Johnson was there to provide opening remarks. It is apparent that the Lions of 29-L
are very busy with community projects and fundraisers. Attendance from
cabinet members was good for this event. I highly encourage other Lions
to attend as well, it will give you a taste of what occurs on the district
level and beyond. It was also a beautiful day to travel and I thank my
traveling buddies, Zone 1 Chair Lion Loranna Tate and Leader Dog Chair
Lion Dave Atkinson for putting up with my crazy driving – we had a good time!!
The second week in October, PDG Gary and I attended the DG nights for
Chester/Newell and also at Mt. Olivet. It was great to see a number of new
Lions inducted by the District Governor at both of those events.
Mt. Olivet also took the opportunity to honor the fireman at their local fire
department for being “everyday heroes”. Mt. Olivet club is cosponsoring
a steak fry with the fire department in the near future.
This past week, we attended the DG. Night at New Cumberland club.
It was great to see our closest neighbors to the north of Weirton
again. They are gearing up for several different activities in the coming weeks.
PDG Gary and I just returned today from the first of the 3 other District
conferences. We traveled to Harpers Ferry in the Eastern Panhandle, for
District I’s conference. They had a good turnout for their conference.
Their International representative was International Director Lion Bill Watkins
and his wife, Lion Nora, from Tennessee. ID Bill was a great
speaker and part of his keynote address included references to the
“everyday heroes” that he has met along the way since becoming an ID.
The entertainment that the conference had included a really inspirational
Magician (who did much more than perform magic); the Jefferson County
High School Pop Singers and a DJ on Saturday evening. The trip took us 4 ½ hours, but the trees were beautiful –
we have such great beauty in our state (as well as the state of
Maryland)! During the conference, the VDG’s met with the Multiple
District Leadership Chair, Past Council Chair Lion Steve Glass;
Cabinet Secretary/Treasurer Lion John Pinkerman and Past
International Director Lion Bob Browning to start preliminary
education regarding our current and upcoming responsibilities – it is a lot
to learn, but we have some great educators in the state, as well as, a lot
of information from Lions International.
I will close for now – we have 2 more conferences to attend in the next 3 weeks – traveling to South
Charleston and Pipestem. We will be busy!!
